Massoma says Kamto remains active MRC member after leadership change

Home Politics Massoma says Kamto remains active MRC member after leadership change

Christian Massoma, a regional federation president of the Mouvement pour la Renaissance du Cameroun, said on 25 October 2026 that Maurice Kamto remains an active member of the party and has not given up his rights, after Kamto stepped down from its presidency.

Speaking on the programme 7 Hebdo, Massoma said Kamto's departure from the party presidency did not amount to leaving the party. He said the MRC would formalise a Kamto candidacy for the 2032 presidential election when the time comes, and that revised party texts now provide for a national council or a convention to designate the candidate before a presidential election.

The MRC held an extraordinary convention at its Odza headquarters in Yaounde on 17 October 2026, at which Tiriane Balbine Noah was elected party president in place of Kamto. Massoma said Noah should follow Kamto's directives.

The brief of 25 October 2026 reported that the party had not issued a statement on Massoma's remarks. That remains the case. It also noted that Kamto was the MRC candidate in the 2018 presidential election.

On 26 October 2026, Kamto published "Pensee de MK n° 131-2026", in which he wrote that the army governs under the cover of an archaic political party that allows it to claim a democratic legitimacy conferred by the same people it represses. The MRC has not responded to a request for comment on Massoma's remarks or on Kamto's publication.
