UDC sets eighth national convention for 4 and 5 December 2026 in Yaounde

The Democratic Union of Cameroon (UDC) will hold its eighth national convention in Yaounde on 4 and 5 December 2026, the party announced. The convention was previously scheduled for other dates, which the party has not published. The UDC has not stated why the earlier dates were dropped.

The convention is the party's sovereign body. Under the UDC's statutes, the national convention is the gathering that elects the party's leadership and sets its line on elections and alliances. That is why the December meeting carries weight beyond the party's own membership: whatever the convention decides binds the UDC's elected officials, its municipal councillors and its parliamentary group.

The UDC is one of Cameroon's older opposition parties, led for decades by Adamou Ndam Njoya, who died in March 2020. His widow, Patricia Ndam Njoya, has led the party since. The party holds seats in the National Assembly and runs municipal councils, which gives it a base the convention will have to account for.

The unresolved question is whether the party presidency itself is on the agenda. The UDC has not said whether the leadership will be contested at the convention, and no declared candidate has come forward publicly. If the convention does elect a leadership, the outcome will settle who speaks for the party in the run-up to the next electoral cycle. If it does not, the current leadership continues.

The second question is the party's electoral stance. The convention is the body that would decide whether the UDC contests upcoming elections alone, seeks alliances, or stays out. The party has not published a draft agenda, so its position on alliances is not yet known.

The convention's decisions will be watched by the other opposition parties, which have been negotiating separately over how to approach the next elections. A UDC decision to ally or to run alone changes the arithmetic those talks rest on.

The indicators are concrete. The party has not yet published the convention's agenda or the list of delegates. The opening session on 4 December 2026 will show whether the leadership question is tabled. The closing session on 5 December 2026 will produce the resolutions on elections and alliances, if the convention reaches them. The UDC's national secretariat is the body that would publish the agenda, and it has not done so.
