Tiriane Balbine Noah was elected president of the Mouvement pour la Renaissance du Cameroun (MRC) on 17 October 2026, the party's main opposition grouping, with 96.89 percent of the vote. The result was announced in the early evening at the party's headquarters in Odza, Yaounde. Noah, 46, was the only candidate after Pierre Emmanuel Binyam withdrew from the race on 14 October 2026. She had been serving as interim leader of the party.
The congress was called to elect a president in place of Maurice Kamto, who resigned. Kamto has already been announced as the party's candidate for the next presidential election, though the party has not said how that designation was made or on what timetable. The leadership change comes after a contested internal process: Willy Mengue asked the sub-prefect of Yaounde IV on 9 October 2026 to withdraw receipt 00332/RDMP/J06.04/SP, issued on 28 September 2026, and lodged a contentious appeal before the president of the Centre Administrative Court on 14 October 2026 asking that its effects be suspended. Cyrille Edou separately asked the sub-prefect to withdraw the receipt. A party member wrote to the sub-prefect on 7 October 2026 citing article 17 of the party statutes and article 68 of its internal rules. The outcome of those challenges was not known at the time of writing.
Noah inherits a party that has positioned itself as the principal opposition force. Her election makes her the first woman to lead the MRC. She faces the task of consolidating internal support after a race that saw one candidate withdraw and legal challenges to the congress. The MRC's next steps will be watched for how it manages the transition from Kamto's leadership and prepares for the presidential election, whose date has not been announced.
On 19 October 2026, Kamto published a reflection on "treason" in his numbered series "Pensée de MK" (No. 130-2026). In it, he wrote: "N'écoutez pas seulement la douleur de la trahison, regardez aussi ce que la trahison vous dévoile." He did not name any person or link the reflection to any specific event. The publication came two days after the congress.
The immediate test for Noah will be the response to the legal challenges before the Centre Administrative Court. The court's ruling on the request to suspend the effects of the receipt will indicate whether the congress is confirmed. The party has not announced a date for that decision. Kamto's role, whether as party president or otherwise, remains to be clarified, and the MRC's candidate selection process for the presidential election is still to be detailed.
