Home Economy Gecam tells government Cameroon’s private sector is ‘out of breath’

The Groupement des Entreprises du Cameroun (Gecam) told a government delegation led by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute that the country's private sector is "out of breath", at the 12th session of the Cameroon Business Forum, the lobby said. The meeting ran from 22 to 23 October 2026.

Gecam used the session to present what it described as an unsparing assessment of the business environment. The lobby's account of the sector's difficulties was the centrepiece of its intervention at the forum.

The Prime Minister led the government side at the meeting. The government delegation's response to Gecam's assessment was not stated in the lobby's account.

The Cameroon Business Forum is the standing meeting at which the private sector and the government discuss the business climate. Gecam's decision to describe the sector as "out of breath" at the 12th session sets out the lobby's position ahead of whatever the forum produces.

  • RFI reports the forum was held in Douala and that Gecam president Célestin Tawamba detailed grievances on roads, energy, taxation, justice and financing, calling the country stalled and demanding action.
