Cameroon releases three 2020 post-election detainees after six years

Three men detained after Cameroon's 2020 post-election unrest were released on 30 October 2026, six years to the day after a military investigating judge ordered them held in preventive detention, the Collectif Sylvain Souop said.

The three were arrested in the night of 21 to 22 September 2020, during military and police operations targeting people linked to a march planned for 22 September 2020 by the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC) and its allies. The judge ordered their preventive detention on 30 October 2020.

The Collectif Sylvain Souop, which campaigns for detainees from the 2020 unrest, said the 44 days they spent in police custody before that order were not counted against their sentence. The circumstances of the release, whether at the end of a full term or under a remission, were not stated.

Their case continues. The three are due before the Supreme Court on 19 November 2026 with 20 other people for the examination of one of their appeals against their convictions. The Collectif said it would return to that procedure.

The release leaves the court proceedings that produced the convictions, and the other 2020 detainees still held, unresolved.
