The Mora council demolished shops and stalls at the town's historic market at about 3 a.m. on 28 October 2026, residents said, completing a relocation the council began months earlier. Mamadou Mota, who presents himself as an elite of the locality, condemned the demolition and called it "an act of absolute cowardice". He said residents of Mayo-Sava were already weakened by insecurity and that the mayor had destroyed their means of subsistence. He called the demolition an "intolerable betrayal" and said those responsible for the economic and social damage should pay. He asked the prefect, the authority that oversees the council, to take responsibility.
Mayor Chetima Hamidou has led the move of traders from the historic market to the new Sankre market, whose first phase is finished. In March 2026, residents surrounded the mayor when he came to destroy shops, saying the new market had too few stalls for everyone. Of about 87 traders and artisans counted at the old market, more than half had moved to the new one, and the mayor began a second phase with 180 shops, three hangars, a butcher's block, two sanitary blocks and a mosque. On 28 September 2026 he signed orders transferring more activities to the new market.
On the morning of 28 October 2026, the RDPC party office in Mora burned. Some residents linked the fire to the demolition and accused residents of acting in reprisal against the council.
