Home Economy Cameroon says World Bank approved $5.01bn, signed accords cover $4.129bn

The Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development said the World Bank board approved financing of $5.01bn for 21 projects, while signed agreements cover 18 active projects worth $4.129bn. The ministry made the statement in a communique dated 15 October 2026, issued during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok.

Of the 21 approved operations, 15 are national and six are regional, the ministry said. It did not publish the list of projects, which leaves the roughly $881m gap between the two figures unexplained.

The ministry's statement sets out how the process works: the World Bank board approves a project before the loan agreement is signed, and disbursements follow in stages. It gave the Douala-Bangui economic corridor as an example. The World Bank approved $425m for the corridor on 12 June 2026, made up of a $407m loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and an $18m credit from the International Development Association. Both were still listed as approved in the bank's financial database on 30 September 2026. A presidential decree on 2 October 2026 authorised signature of the IBRD agreement.

The ministry put the portfolio at $3.2bn on 9 September 2026, and the World Bank listed 22 active projects, six of them regional, as of 10 September 2026.

The figures matter because they set out what Cameroon has secured from its largest multilateral lender and what remains unsigned.
