Home Security Atanga Nji announces tighter security and new mototaxi rules in Centre region

Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji announced on 26 October 2026 that security forces in the Centre region will intensify the pursuit of criminals, and that mototaxis will have to comply with new rules, at a security meeting in Yaounde.

The meeting brought together Centre region governor Naseri Paul Bea, the mayor of Yaounde, the prefects of the region's 10 departments, the seven sub-prefects of Mfoundi department and regional heads of the defence and security forces. Atanga Nji said the region had seen a rise in crime, feminicides, assaults and drug trafficking, and that the hunt for suspects would be stepped up under the coordination of administrative authorities. He called on residents to cooperate more closely with the authorities.

On mototaxis, the minister said the sale of a motorcycle without a registration plate would be prohibited and that the registration process launched in 2023 would be intensified. City taxis will have to display their badge under an initiative of the mayor of Yaounde, the minister said.

The minister said the measures aim to end assaults and guarantee security in the Centre region, particularly Mfoundi department, where the national institutions are based.
