Cameroon's Public Works Ministry set out plans to rebuild the Edéa-Douala section of National Route 3 at a meeting chaired by Public Works Minister Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi in Yaounde on 2 November 2026. A joint mission from the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union and the European Investment Bank attended, led by Adrien Veron-Okamoto, a senior transport specialist at the AFD's Paris headquarters, alongside Jerome Notebaert, the agency's country director in Cameroon.
The project covers the full reconstruction of the road's pavement structure, reusing material from the existing surface, the ministry said. It includes a second bridge over the Dibamba with its approach roads and the rehabilitation of the existing bridge, a 6 km extension of the Douala urban boulevard to four lanes from the Dibamba crossing toward Edéa, and four overtaking sections totalling 6.6 km. A new digital weigh station at Missolé 2 will replace the station at Yassa, which the ministry said urban growth has overtaken, and ageing culverts and drainage structures will be replaced.
The ministry said long-term maintenance contracts tied to service levels will cover the rebuilt road, and that connected rural roads, storage facilities for farm produce and works reserved for Cameroonian small and medium-sized firms under a labour-intensive programme form part of the plan.
The three European financiers back the project, the ministry said. It did not state the total cost, the share each lender will carry, the contractors or a completion date.
