Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute visited the construction site of a pharmaceutical plant at Meyo on 13 October 2026, accompanied by Public Health Minister Malachie Manaouda, to assess progress on the project.

Dion Ngute said some public officials were delaying the work. "It is not normal that certain civil servants, for reasons I do not know, take actions that slow this project. I was told that there is equipment stuck in customs," he said at the site.

Idriss Confiance, the project promoter, said the site still lacks water and electricity. He said the health minister promised both within two months, after which the plant would be completed and equipment tested, with the World Health Organization due to run tests on products before production begins.

Manaouda said the plant would help Cameroon respond to health emergencies. "With the pandemics and epidemics we have known, we realised that a country that is not autonomous pharmaceutically will struggle to face all these health emergencies," he said.

The project also includes a hospital complex near the plant. Cameroon produces less than 5% of the medicines it uses, and the government says the plant is meant to narrow that gap.
