Home Society Camrail says 98% of Eseka crash compensation paid, 10 years on

Camrail said on 21 October 2026 that it has paid 98% of the compensation owed to victims of the Eseka train derailment, ten years after the crash. The company gave the figure as the country marked the anniversary of the accident, which killed and injured passengers travelling between Yaounde and Douala on 21 October 2016.

Families of victims said they are still waiting for justice, and dispute that the compensation process is complete. The families did not give a figure for the number of claims they say remain unpaid.

The derailment of a passenger train near Eseka, in the Centre region, was one of the deadliest rail accidents in Cameroon's history. Camrail, the concessionaire that operates the country's rail network, has faced claims from victims' relatives over compensation and over responsibility for the crash.

The anniversary falls as the compensation dispute between the operator and victims' families remains unresolved, ten years after the accident.
