The bureau of the National Assembly met in Yaounde on 12 October 2026 to begin the designation of a new member of the Constitutional Council to replace Bah Oumarou Sanda, who died on 7 August 2026 at the age of 86.
The meeting was chaired by the speaker of the National Assembly, Theodore Datouo, and held in the Solomon Tandeng Muna committee room at the Palais de Verre Paul Biya. The assembly said in a communication after the meeting that the replacement of Sanda was the main item on the agenda. The bureau was convened for 11am on 12 October by a notice signed on 8 October by the secretary general of the institution, Andre-Noel Essian.
Article 51 of the Constitution provides that three of the 11 members of the Constitutional Council are designated by the speaker of the National Assembly after consulting the bureau. The third paragraph of the same article provides that when a member dies, the competent authority designates a replacement to serve the remainder of the term.
The assembly's communication did not name the person it will designate. Once designated, the name is transmitted to the president of the Republic, who appoints the member by decree. The president also appoints the president of the council, a post left vacant by the death of Clement Atangana on 4 October 2026.
