Home Policy 14,502 census enumerators still unpaid, World Bank mission intervenes

The Hiswaca project said on 7 October 2026 that it had informed a World Bank mission that 14,502 census enumerators have not been paid, and that 7,000 complaints are pending. The figures were established at a meeting to assess the censuses held at the headquarters of the Bureau central des recensements et des etudes de population, the project said.

The World Bank mission recommended that the project send census coordinations a detailed note so that payments owed to the enumerators can be processed, and that coordinators return compliant files built from verified and validated lists of agents. The project said the complaints it received were well founded, without saying how many concern pay.

The amount owed and the reason payments are blocked are not known, and no deadline has been given for settling them. The fourth general census of population and housing began in April 2026. Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute extended the count to 15 September by an order signed on 31 July 2026, a second extension. The results are awaited.
