Babba urges opposition coalition to turn legislative vote into referendum on Biya

Home Elections Babba urges opposition coalition to turn legislative vote into referendum on Biya

Abdouraman Hamadou Babba, an opposition figure, called on opposition parties to build a coalition and turn the coming legislative and municipal elections into a referendum on the continuation of President Paul Biya's government, in a statement published on 26 October 2026.

Babba said the exclusion of the FSNC, the party of Issa Tchiroma Bakary, from the elections showed that the government feared a repeat of the presidential election of 12 October 2025. He described the exclusion as "lache et arbitraire" and said the authorities had acted to prevent Tchiroma from changing his mind once the electoral register is convened. He did not name the authority that suspended the party or the legal grounds for the decision.

Babba also said he had set out 10 changes he would pursue if the opposition won the elections. He did not list them in the statement.

He urged candidates to prepare their files for investiture by an opposition party before the electoral register is convened, which he said would happen by 9 November 2026. He did not say whether he was leading a coalition or a single party.

The elections would decide the legislative and municipal seats that the FSNC will not contest.
